The heat of grinding causes some variation in the thickness of individual tiles. The installer must allow for the variation. Lippage is the variation in the height of the tile edges on a surface. If the edges are up and down too much this really detracts from the look of the surface.

On top of this put another two to four inches of fine gravel or sand and pack this down. Most of these surfaces are prone to seasonal shifting and intrusion of weeds and grass. To minimize this, place a weed barrier or soil fabric covered with a half to one inch of sand or fine gravel before placing the surface covering material. Concrete, brick and patio pavers can now be placed and settled in with a rubber mallet and a coat of fine play sand groomed into the cracks.

If you use decorative gravel, an in to two inch covering is usually sufficient. This surface should be rolled or tamped in place to provide a smooth surface. Selection of the type of gravel, chips or other loose surface material varies with the part of the country, season of the year and the price per cubic foot or cubic yard.

Tools Required for Repair of Wrought Iron Railings

Evidence of railings made from wrought iron can be found as back as 17th century. During that time, the concept of working on metals had justed started and the railings made from iron were treated as act of art.

Though the railings prepared from wrought iron are quite durable and resistant to corrosion, these are not shock tolerant and the railings tend to break if something drops on them. Car Engine Cranks Over But Doesn't Start - Automotive Repair Tips

Many times in the past as an automotive technician, I would be given a car to diagnose that either had a problem that prevented the car's engine from turning over or that prevented the car's engine from starting. These are two completely different scenarios and these problems are approached differently. Sometimes when the service writer would create a work order, he wouldn't convey the REAL problem that the customer was experiencing. If the customer or the service writer would make sure the correct explanation of the problem is written, some unnecessary trips out to the car with the wrong tools would be avoided. For instance if the car doesn't crank over at all, I would need to take my jump box with me. And if the car cranked over but didn't start, I would want my scan tool and some starting fluid.

A car that cranks over but doesn't start, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. The first step in diagnosing a no start is to scan for codes with a code reader or scan tool. Approximately 40% of the cars towed in that I worked on in the last 25 years, either had a bad fuel pump or the fuel gage read incorrectly and the car was just out of fuel. Yes, some people actually have their cars towed in when all they need is some gas! If the fuel gage indicates that there is fuel in the tank, most people will assume naturally that the car does have fuel. But if the fuel sending unit or gage is off slightly, the car's gas tank could actually be empty. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the car. If the car starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the car is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gage and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. If the injectors don't have pulse the engine won't start.

Broken timing belts also caused about 40% of the tow ins in my experience. A broken timing belt can fail causing the car to seem as if it ran out of fuel while driving. When trying to start the car though, the engine typically spins over faster than normal due to the engine having low compression from the timing being off and the valves being open at the wrong time. If the timing belt breaks, there sometimes could be a code set in the vehicles ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for no signal from the cam sensor. If this code is present, you can sometimes check to see if the cam is moving by removing the oil cap while someone engages the starter. Also the upper timing cover can be removed to allow access to the timing belt for inspection. Most of the time when a timing belt breaks the teeth (or cogs) are stripped down at the crank pulley the bottom sprocket preventing the belt from turning the camshaft.

Lack of pulse from the fuel injectors as stated before can prevent a car from running. This brings me to the third most common cause of a car that cranks over but doesn't start, approximately 20% of the tow ins that I worked on had the following problem. Many times the cause of lack of pulse is because of a bad cam or crank sensor. If the computer doesn't see either the crank or the cam turning, the fuel injectors won't be commanded to pulse. One quick indication that a cam or crank sensor may be bad is to check for RPM movement on the tachometer (if equipped) when trying to start the engine. If you have a scan tool not just a code reader, the cam and crank sensor data can be checked on many vehicles by accessing the appropriate screen. If no revolutions are shown when attempting to start the car, the respective sensor could be bad.

Obviously there are many vehicle makes, with different ignition and fuel delivery systems that may require a service manual to properly diagnose or to delve deeper. But with the above tips and tricks that I've used over the years you'll be checking the most likely causes, that hopefully will send you in the right direction.

A cheaper alternative to run but more expensive to install would be to add a radiator or two to the room. The heat from radiators can help to give a nice cozy feel to a conservatory. The final option that is proving to be more and more popular is the installation of under floor heating within the conservatory. This is probably the most expensive option to go for but can give the best results as well as making the conservatory feel the most livable.

One Problem Basement Waterproofing Can't Solve

The best way to keep outside water from infiltrating your home is to institute a comprehensive basement waterproofing program. And whether basement waterproofing means installing complex drainage systems or reinforcing your foundation, it means saving potentially thousands of dollars in home repair costs, and avoiding the heartbreak of foundation cracks and black mold.

But of course, not all basement moisture comes from outside. Traditional basement waterproofing can only go so far toward keeping the crevasses and crawlspaces of your home completely dry. And traditional basement waterproofing can't prevent condensation from happening inside your home.

When water condenses in the remote corners of your house, it can damage woodwork and create the perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive. Sure, waterproofing your basement will prevent moisture from wicking through the concrete of your foundation. But if your condensation is caused by poor insulation or ventilation, all the basement waterproofing in the world won't help.

If you live in a cold climate, you may see water vapor form after everyday activities like cooking, showering or doing laundry. But water vapor needs a way out of your home; if it doesn't find one, it condenses on cold surfaces like the spaces between walls, or in the roof framing. Add too much condensation to these places, and they start looking good to black mold and mildew, which can result in major structural damage, or worse, health problems. And while a leaky roof might be obvious after a few days, water inside walls can go unchecked for years at a time.

But don't worry: There's a twofold solution.

Part one is good insulation. When your home is well-insulated, surfaces vulnerable to mold growth and decomposition won't get too cold, and condensation won't form. So it's important to keep all attics and crawlspaces well-ventilated, as well as interior walls. The insulation will wick away the moisture from the inside of the walls. Insulation also ensures that not too much air - which carries water vapor with it - can escape into the attic and walls.

Part two is good ventilation. Water vapor needs a place to go, and you want it to go outside the house. Think of ventilation as a fail-safe for those times insulation can't do its job. When water vapor does escape into the attic, it'll simply head outside.

Spider Control Tips For the Home Owner

One of my favorite pests. I say that tongue and cheek because as the Orkin Man, I truly made 80% of my living selling the ability to drive spiders away. Yes, I know there are some truly nasty spiders in different parts of the country. Realistically speaking though, a spider is a spider. In most cases, they are just like you and I. Looking for a bite to eat and a place to stay dry. I have never run into or heard stories of anything like the movie "Arachnid" where the spider has a brain and is out to kill off the human race. Most of these guys are just looking to eke out the next day without getting stepped on.

Prevention: As with all pests, the best prevention is home maintenance. While I am in the habit of looking around my home at least twice a month, many homeowners may never actually inspect their home. With spiders, this is especially a good habit to get into because of their webbing. When you do your routine walk around, and walk through (inside), take a long handled broom.

Check the eaves as well as the foundation outside and look up in the corners of the interior walls. You are looking for any signs of spider webs. If you have followed some of my instructions from Landscaping this should only take a couple of minutes. If you find webs, brush them away with the broom. If you find spiders... your choice... squish or get a paper plate, scoop them up and let them go in another part of the yard. Believe it or not, that is about all you can do. I used to have customers ask me, "will they ever come back?".

The answer is yes. Spiders, while they are not as cute as we would like them, live on this planet just like we do, and as I said before, are just looking to keep fed and dry. Spiders are also very beneficial to our eco-system. They are a major predator of mosquitoes and other flying insects. Here is the "fly in the ointment" if you will... by reducing the number of spiders around your home, you will find an increased number of pesky flying insects: gnats, flies, mosquitoes, etc. If you follow this advice, you will have less spiders!

Deck Construction Building Help

Working in the construction business for over 30 years and listening to homeowners, tell me how fortunate I am to have the ability to work on my own home. It kind of makes me feel good to hear them praise me and when I have completed their project, they usually are extremely happy with how it turned out. I've been listening to this for years and came to one conclusion, anyone can do what I do, with the correct information.

I was building a deck and a homeowner and his son were there constantly, watching me work on the project. They would ask if they can help and if there was anything they could do, they would like to learn the deck building process, so one day they could build their own decks. Most of the time, they were in my way and slowed me down. I finally got to a point where I had to asked them if they could watch from a distance, because I was starting to run behind on the project. It was starting to cost me money to educate them. I just didn't have time for this and there was no way, that I wanted to hurt their feelings or make them mad at me.

They agreed and at the end of the day, would have a couple of questions for me. I told the father, that I would bring him a few books on deck building and he could keep them as long as he needed. Him and his son were more than happy to accept my offer and the next day, they were nowhere in sight. At the end of the day as I was putting my tools away, a homeowner and his son approached me and thanked me for loaning them the books, but they were done with them. The son explained to me, that they were going to purchase some of their own books on deck building, because mine were a little out of date.

To make a long story short, I finished the deck, got paid and went on my way. A few months later they contacted me and asked if I had time, can I come over the house and look at the new deck, that they built next to mine. I said I would be glad to, and would be there tomorrow evening. When I arrived at the job site, I couldn't even get out of my truck, the father and his son were waiting for me in the driveway and directed me to drive to the back of the home.

There new deck was about 10' x 10' and matched the one that I built pretty good. They did a great job and after I told them, what a wonderful job they did building the deck, they were like two kids in a candy store. It seemed like, I had just made their day and it made me feel good, and that they felt good.

Sometimes building a deck or home repairs can be performed like a professional, with a little bit of help, from the book.

Here's a word of advice for any contractor, Carpenter, handyman or homeowner that is planning to remove an interior wall from your home or someone else's. Beware of removing interior walls, to eliminate your fears of the house collapsing. Some of the interior walls inside of the house are important structural components of the building.

Some of these walls hold up floors, roofs and other loadbearing sections that could create safety problems within the structure of the house itself. This is an area where an expert with framing skills should be consulted. What is the definition of someone with excellent framing skills? Some one with at least 10 years as a master framing carpenter.

My home building experience consists of three decades for over 30 years of assembling some of the most difficult sections of a home. During these years I have seen damage done to houses from removing structural interior walls. Most of this damage could be repaired with a little structural engineering. Some of the damage could not be repaired and caused other damage to different sections of the house. The damage caused in some cases to the floor and the roof framing had to be completely rebuilt.

I'm not telling you about every single thing I have ran into but you would be surprised if I started to make a list of all the homeowners and professionals in the building industry or home selling and buying business that contacted me to remove a structural component of a building. There have even been a few of these people that told me everything was going to be okay just go ahead and remove the structural building component.

Needless to say I would leave these people very irritated but I'm sure they found someone to do the job. The bad news is I was normally the person they would hire to go back and repair the damaged building after these people were gone and out of business. There have been cases where people have removed an interior walls against my better judgment and over the years of driving by in these homes I personally got to witness the structural damage that was occurring on the outside of the house.

I have no idea what the inside of the house looked like but could only imagine. My advice again when removing interior walls is to hire an experienced contractor or at least get some advice from an experienced framing carpenter. This does not include your basic know it all that has basic construction experience like your father in law, parents, friends, golfing associates or people you work with that tell you not to worry about it, just do it, everything will work out just fine.

Drywall Repair Considerations

There are numerous reasons why someone would be looking for drywall repairs. Just today I was getting a sandwich at a local eatery and a group of teenagers were bragging about how they had just finished repairing the walls from a party that got out of hand and were hoping that their parents wouldn't notice when they returned; I wonder who will be more surprised.

Doors are notorious for having a grudge against drywall. People have been known to poke, punch or even fall through sheetrock at various stages of life. If you have decided to rent a property, you may be getting a tough education in just how many odd and sundry damages can occur to walls. Perhaps you have purchased your first home and are noticing some cracking or nail pops - check your contract, a good portion of that should be covered in your initial warranty.

Regardless of the source of the damage to your drywall, you now have to decide whether it is worth spending your time to repair these areas or if you will hire someone else to complete the task for you. Whether you are doing the repairs yourself or discussing the cost with contractors, you may find these points helpful:

1) Nothing is perfect, primarily you are creating the perception of perfection, when repairing even a small damage you will want to flare your repair area so as to get a greater surface absorbing the repair. This will help to divert the eye from inconsistencies that even the best repair can leave behind.

2) If the sheetrock is broken, heavily cracked or noticeably uneven you most likely will need to remove and re-inforce a section behind the wall board. I have found that 1"x3" pine is a great resource in providing a firm backing and plenty of room to fasten the repaired section to existing drywall. There are some re-inforced surface patching materials, but unless you are used to working with these they can be difficult to texture.

3) Hot muds (joint compounds that have a set drying time) and aerosol textures are great for smaller areas. When working with hot mud, check the label and give yourself plenty of time before the material hardens because they tend to be a little harder to tool and difficult to sand. The aerosol textures are great for small repairs as they save you from having to get your texturing equipment out and dry much faster than convential texture.

Resolving Home Remodeling Problems - Remodeling Contractors

Your thinking about remodeling your home. You have asked everyone you know if they have a good contractor they trust or do they know anyone who does. You might have read a few articles like this or visited a couple of web sites to get as much information as you can about dealing with contractors during a house remodel.

Now the time has come for you to take the first step and call one of the contractors. You have spent some time looking through books and magazines to find just what you want done to your house. You have a idea of how much money you are going to spend if the job can be done exactly how you envision it.

You have called the city or county building department in your area to find out what is required from them in the way of building permits. If you have done some of these things you are ahead of most homeowners. There are a few of you that do know what can be done with a rough idea of how much the project will cost. Most of the home remodeling Anxiety is caused from the miscommunication or no communication. The biggest problems I have had are from some sort of communication misunderstanding. I have been very lucky with having less than a handful of what I would consider a major home remodeling problem.

Do your best to explain what it is that you want done to your home. This also means understanding what it is exactly in writing what you are going to have done to your house. If you or the contractor do not understand this could lead to a possible anxiety attack and a problem.

Once you hire a home remodeling contractor the next step is to let them do their job. This doesn't mean. If you are watching them tear into a wall and the picture on the other side is about to fall off. Don't bother them. Of course stop them and remove the picture. We all make mistakes. If you see something isn't working out, talk to your contractor about it.

Don't be afraid of your contractor. If you see that what you had in mind isn't working out to your satisfaction. Explain the problem calmly and be to the point. I don't like it when someone beats around the bush and I never get to the problem. I would rather have them yelling at me, telling me what a jerk I am than taking two hours to make a point I have to drag out of them anyway.

If you do come to a problem that neither one of you can solve or you think the other one is at fault for whatever reason. You can contact the Department of Consumer Affairs and explain your situation to them. There is a good chance if you need a arbitrator they will set up a time and day for you and your contractor to meet. The arbitrator will come to a final decision for the both of you and that will be final. Of course their is always the Supreme Court... Well we don't want to go that far do we.

Most of the time if you have everything in writing in the form of a contract you shouldn't have any problems. If you do there is a great chance they will be able to be resolved quickly.
Doing major remodeling to your home can be extremely stressful at some points. Listen to your contractor when he is giving you advice on how to deal with the stress. He is a good source of wisdom especially if he had been doing it for years.

Resolving home remodeling anxiety will be a little more difficult during the construction process. It is very important to think the remodeling project through all the way to the end if you can. Try to think about worst case scenarios and figure out the best possible solutions before they happen.

Several Items to Think About When Building a Home

What type of Personality do I want my home to have?

When you consider building a new home, the first thing you should think about is your own personality and interests. There are many questions you should ask yourself. For instance, how often do I entertain? Do I like large gatherings, or just of few close friends? Am I the type of person who likes lots of daylight and therefore plenty of windows? Do I want to climb stairs every day, and will I still want to in ten years or so if I still own this home? Am I a craftsman-type who wants extra garage space for tools and equipment? Will I need space for an RV, quads, yard equipment, etc? Next I would want to consider the yard. For instance, if you have kids you may want a flat lot with a large grassy area for them to play.If not, a terraced garden or even a pool with lots of concrete around would be more your style. It would also be advisable to pick up one of the software programs readily available to the consumer today. There are also various magazines available to peruse for ideas. Another good idea is to drive around and take several pictures of homes that you like.

One suggestion I would have is to take a drive around the area you are planning to build in several different times of day on different days of the week. This way you would get a good feel of what the neighborhood is really like. It would also be wise to check out the local school that your children would be attending. Notice the type of houses that are already there. Will your style and size fit in nicely to the existing surroundings? This may be your dream house, but you need to always think of eventual resale.

How are you going to get your new home built?

Just as there are several different ways to design your home there are also several different ways of getting it built:

1. Do it yourself. This method would likely cost less, but would definitely be more time consuming. This is not a good choice for someone with no construction knowledge or skills.
2. Act as your own general contractor. This is a great choice for those people who can do some of the work themselves. You can pick and choose what you want to do, and hire sub-contractors for those jobs that require more skill, such as electrical work. Get several bids, and remember that the cheapest is not always the best when it comes to contractors. Check all references for anyone you consider hiring!!!
3. Hire a semi custom builder. This is a builder that usually builds several houses per year, and has a set of plans that you can choose from.This would be a fairly quick method of raising the house as they are accustomed to building the same plans and they already have all their sub contractors lined up and ready to work. They often will allow some alterations to the existing plans.
4. Hire a custom builder:These folks normally build a small number of homes a year. Custom builders would work off of a set of plans presumably supplied by you. They would be much more willing and able to deviate from the original plan if you wanted changes made. They would also be likely to take pride in their work and stand behind their workmanship.

Several alternatives:

There are other options to building a home. You could choose to purchase a home that had the basic floor plan that you desired, and do a quick remodel on the inside. Or, purchase a total fixer upper and "go to town" on it, changing whatever you desired inside and out. If you already own a piece of land, you could choose a modular home, or prefab. These homes have come a long way from the "trailers" of the past. Many of them look just like a traditionally built house.

Affordable and Sustainable DIY Earthbag Homes

Earthbag building (sometimes called sandbag building) is surely one of the lowest cost, most practical building methods. First used by the military for building durable, bullet and blast resistant structures, this building method has recently experienced a surge of interest among do-it-yourself builders. There are now an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 earthbag structures, including homes, offices, shops, schools, temples, clinics, orphanages and even ecovillages.

One of the strongest selling points is affordability. A simple earthbag dome, for example, using recycled grain bags and earth can be built for around $100. A larger, more comfortable home can be built for around $500-$1000. The EarthDome House at Terrasante Village in Tucson, Arizona is just one example.

Earthbags are ideal for owner-builders. The necessary skills for each step of construction can be learned in a few minutes. It boils down to simply filling bags with an appropriate fill material (typically subsoil or gravel) and tamping them solid. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Also, few tools are required - shovels, buckets, garden hose. The few additional tools needed (tamper, slider) can be made cheaply and easily.

Earthbag buildings are sustainable since they are made primarily of earth from or near the building site. Earthbag domes do not require wood, thereby reducing pressure on our forests. Expensive concrete foundations are not required if you use gravel-filled bags. In addition, these structures are safe, quiet, nontoxic, rodent proof, and fire, hurricane and flood resistant.

Energy efficiency is another strong plus in favor of building with bags. The massive earth walls stabilize interior temperatures in hot climates. In cold and hot climates, earthbags can be filled with an insulating material, such as lava rock, pumice, vermiculite or perlite. Some builders are experimenting with rice hulls for insulation, which are often free for the taking. In general, lightweight insulating materials (such as those just mentioned) require far less labor than those of tamped earth and provide comfort through the harshest winters or hottest summers.

Earthbags can also be used to create underground (root/storm cellars, etc.) or earth-bermed structures, privacy and retaining walls, planters, furniture (built-in benches, etc.), and many other uses. Earthbags are very adaptable and work just as well for domes as they do for structures with vertical walls. They also excel at creating free-form, curving structures.

As earthbag building grows by leaps and bounds, NGOs and other organizations are exploring their use for emergency shelters. Millions of victims of wars and natural disasters need low cost housing and temporary shelter. More durable than tarps and more comfortable than tents, earthbags work perfectly since even unskilled workers can build their own shelters - all without destroying local resources.

Building Stronger Relationships - Understanding Those Who Are Different Than You

To become a citizen of the world, it's helpful if you understand how it feels to not belong. Now that may sound like an illogical statement. Doesn't being a world citizen connote a comfort level in most, if not all, global locales? But the key to becoming a world citizen is to understand the essence of what it feels like to be an outsider. That feeling is what fine tunes observation skills and creates the opportunity to learn how to connect with all people from all backgrounds. When you don't belong, you learn how to adapt, fit in, acclimate and connect. Most minority members will relate to my logic. For the rest of you who are majority members or the powerbase, keep an open mind and my point will become clearer as you read on.

The minority knows more about the majority than the majority knows about itself. I heard this meaningful adage for the first time during a lecture in grad school at the University of Chicago--ironically the same institution that Barack Obama attended. And I have no doubt the adage is one he, along with most minorities, understand well. Women know more about operating in a man's world than most men ever think or thought about. And, in my home country, the USA, Blacks, Latinos and Asians know more about conforming to Caucasian norms than most fair skinned Americans ever thought about. Additionally, gays and lesbians know more about fitting into the straight world than most heterosexuals ever contemplated. The reality- the powerbase typically doesn't concern itself with their own actions or take the time to "look in the mirror"-- because the majority doesn't need to- the majority set the rules and simply following the societal norm.

The adage is universal and is applicable around the world. For example Turkish migrant workers living in Germany know more about the ins and outs of fitting into German society than most Germans. But, for me, as an American who was born and raised overseas, the adage takes on a different global meaning. People around the globe know more about the United States than Americans know about themselves. A BBC survey showed that more Japanese followed the recent US Presidential election than Americans. Conversely, how many Americans are familiar with Japan's political structure or leaders? And why can only 11% of the US population identify Iraq on a map of the Middle East? It's because the adage once again rings true.

However, America is in decline and appears to be losing its superpower status. The country can no longer afford to be self-consumed and needs to invest in global education. On the bright side, Barack Obama's victory may help Americans expand their vision and move the country down the multicultural experience curve. Beyond economic survival, a variety of factors in his personal life-- growing up in Indonesia and multi-cultural Hawaii into a bi-racial family with a Kenyan father, an Indonesian step-father, and a Caucasian mother-have set the stage for American cultural exploration. And Obama is already a global media sensation because of his perceived ability to relate to and understand a number of international perspectives.

Similarly, my multicultural expertise is a primarily a result of my upbringing. My father's job took my family to a number of global locales and thus I had the opportunity to straddle several different worlds- always with one foot in the American ex-patriot world while my other toe dipped into a number of international environments. Every few years I was surrounded by new languages, cultures and international peers. It was an amazing experience. And as a result, I am as comfortable in Cairo or Copenhagen as I am in Cleveland. But my greatest takeaway from the whole experience-- I can see the world through many lenses and can understand a number of cultural perspectives.

Living abroad taught me to observe, listen, adapt and thrive. I was exposed to new cultural approaches to life and learned to appreciate diverse ways of living. But the more I traveled and interacted, the more I realized how much we have in common simply as people-regardless of our backgrounds. Most of us have families, relationships, friendships and share many common threads like the desire for respect and appreciation. We can maintain our customs, but still come together as one people. I lived it, have felt it and know it to be true. And I have my interactive childhood to thank for establishing my passion.

I have a dream. I hope the world embraces an international and cultural renaissance. And Globally Hip is committed to being a conduit to change. Removing Interior Walls

Here's a word of advice for any contractor, Carpenter, handyman or homeowner that is planning to remove an interior wall from your home or someone else's. Beware of removing interior walls, to eliminate your fears of the house collapsing. Some of the interior walls inside of the house are important structural components of the building.

Some of these walls hold up floors, roofs and other loadbearing sections that could create safety problems within the structure of the house itself. This is an area where an expert with framing skills should be consulted. What is the definition of someone with excellent framing skills? Some one with at least 10 years as a master framing carpenter.

My home building experience consists of three decades for over 30 years of assembling some of the most difficult sections of a home. During these years I have seen damage done to houses from removing structural interior walls. Most of this damage could be repaired with a little structural engineering. Some of the damage could not be repaired and caused other damage to different sections of the house. The damage caused in some cases to the floor and the roof framing had to be completely rebuilt.

I'm not telling you about every single thing I have ran into but you would be surprised if I started to make a list of all the homeowners and professionals in the building industry or home selling and buying business that contacted me to remove a structural component of a building. There have even been a few of these people that told me everything was going to be okay just go ahead and remove the structural building component.

Needless to say I would leave these people very irritated but I'm sure they found someone to do the job. The bad news is I was normally the person they would hire to go back and repair the damaged building after these people were gone and out of business. There have been cases where people have removed an interior walls against my better judgment and over the years of driving by in these homes I personally got to witness the structural damage that was occurring on the outside of the house.

I have no idea what the inside of the house looked like but could only imagine. My advice again when removing interior walls is to hire an experienced contractor or at least get some advice from an experienced framing carpenter. This does not include your basic know it all that has basic construction experience like your father in law, parents, friends, golfing associates or people you work with that tell you not to worry about it, just do it, everything will work out just fine.
